Cristina Guedes (Macau, 1964) gründete 1994 gemeinsam mit Francisco Vieira de Campos das Büro Menos é Mais in Porto (Portugal). Die Fähigkeit, mit weniger mehr zu erreichen, ist ihre größte Stärke: Sie streben danach, die „Ökonomie“ der Mittel mit dem „Reichtum“ der Materialität und der emotionalen Einbindung der Nutzer in Einklang zu bringen. Ihre Arbeiten sind pragmatische Antworten auf spezifische Kontexte. Besonders deutlich wird dies beim Seilbahnkomplex im historischen Gebiet von Gaia (präsentiert auf der Biennale von Venedig 2016, die die Frage stellte: „Ist es möglich, innerhalb eines privaten Auftrags öffentlichen Raum zu schaffen?“) sowie im Archipelago Contemporary Arts Centre auf der Azoreninsel São Miguel (gezeigt auf der Biennale von Venedig 2018 „Public Without Rhetoric“).
Parallel zu ihrer praktischen Tätigkeit lehrt CG und ist Gastprofessorin an der Fakultät für Architektur der Universität Porto (FAUP) sowie an der Fakultät für Architektur und Kunst der Lusíada-Universität Porto (FAAULP). Zuvor war sie Gastprofessorin an der Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio (USI, 2018–2022) sowie am Fachbereich Architektur der Autonomen Universität Lissabon (Da/UAL, 2002–2003).
CG wurde zu Konferenzen, Jurys, nationalen und internationalen Ausstellungen sowie akademischen Kritiken an verschiedenen Institutionen eingeladen, darunter die ETH Zürich, die Mackintosh School of Architecture und das Trinity College Dublin. Zudem war sie 2014 Kuratorin für Portugal bei der IX. BIAU „New Geographies“ in Rosario, Argentinien. Sie wurde vom Royal Institute of British Architects als International RIBA Fellow ausgezeichnet.
Kürzlich erhielt sie den AICA-Preis 2023 (International Association of Art Critics). Außerdem wurde sie 2023 mit dem Preis „Women in Architecture“ bei den Nationalen Architekturpreisen „espaço“ (Casa da Arquitectura, Porto) geehrt. Zuvor wurde sie unter anderem mit dem Secil-Architekturpreis 2020 (Lissabon, ex aequo mit Aires Mateus), dem AIT Award 2020 (Frankfurt), dem BIGMAT International Award 2017 (Luxemburg), dem FAD Award 2016 (Barcelona) sowie dem BIAU-Architekturpreis 2016 (São Paulo), 2012 (Cádiz) und 2006 (Montevideo) ausgezeichnet.
Ihre Projekte wurden zudem mehrfach für den Mies-van-der-Rohe-Preis nominiert (2019, 2015, 2013, 2009).

Cristina Guedes (Macau 1964) founded the studio Menos é Mais with Francisco Vieira de Campos in 1994 (Oporto Portugal). The ability to do more with less is their greatest asset, seeking to balance the „economy“ of means with the „richness” of the materiality and emotional involvement of the users. Their works are pragmatic responses to specific contexts. This is best typified in the Cable Car complex in the Historic Site of Gaia (shown in the 2016 Venice Biennale underlining the question “is it possible to create public space within a private commission?”), and in the Archipelago Contemporary Arts Centre in the Azores island of S. Miguel (shown in the 2018 Venice Biennale“ Public Without Rhetoric“).
CG teaches in parallel with her practice and she is Invited Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP); the Faculty of Architecture and Arts of the Lusíada University of Porto (FAAULP). She has previously been a Visiting Professor at the USI – Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio (2018-2022) and a Visiting Professor at the Department of Architecture at Autónoma University of Lisbon, Da/UAL (2002–2003).
CG have been invited to conferences, juries, national and international exhibitions and academic critiques at various faculties such as ETH Zurich, Mackintosh School of Architecture, Trinity College Dublin, among others. and was commissary of Portugal at the IX BIAU New Geographies, at Rosario, Argentina 2014. CG was honoured by the Royal Institute of British Architects by becoming International RIBA Fellows.

Lecture Series
Made in Portugal

Im Rahmen der HB2 Lecture Series an der TU Wien widmet sich die diesjährige Vortragsreihe dem Thema „Made in Portugal“. Internationale Architekt:innen und Ingenieur:innen aus Portugal geben Einblicke in ihre aktuellen Projekte, Entwurfsansätze und die architektonische Praxis in einem spezifischen kulturellen und geografischen Kontext.
Die Vorträge bieten eine Plattform für den Austausch über zeitgenössische Architektur, Konstruktion und Gestaltung und ermöglichen Studierenden sowie Interessierten einen direkten Dialog mit renommierten Büros.

As part of the HB2 Lecture Series at TU Wien, this year’s program is dedicated to the theme "Made in Portugal" International architects and engineers from Portugal will provide insights into their current projects, design philosophies, and architectural practice within a specific cultural and geographical context. The lectures offer a platform for exchange on contemporary architecture, construction, and design, enabling students and interested attendees to engage in direct dialogue with renowned firms.
