Fanni Izabella Magyaróvári (Faculty of Humanities, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest) Designing a Modern Playschool. Networks of Design, Architecture and Education The development of the modern kindergarten environment was shaped by a number of theories and concepts, related to progressive educational methods of the 20th century, often referred to as the „Century of the Child “. During the first half of the century, early childhood came into focus for the first time as a developmental stage distinct from school age. My doctoral research focuses on reform pedagogical approaches and their impact on kindergarten architecture in Hungary. One aspect of my research is a unique example from this era that fulfills both modernist and educational principles: the Rózsadomb playschool in Budapest, designed by Zoltán Révész in 1932–1933. Through the story of this building, the presentation outlines the network of clients and designers that included key figures of modern design and progressive educators in Hungary.
